Most couples assume that
once they stop using birth control, pregnancy will occur right
away. Sometimes it's not as easy as anticipated,
especially in couples who postpone having children until later
in life. Some may not realize that age can have a
serious impact on the ability to achieve. Fertility rates decline with age, thus the
sooner couples seek treatment, the better their chances. Many
treatment options are available that can eliminate some of the
age-related barriers to conception.
If you can say "yes" to
one or more of the following then you should
strongly consider seeing a reproductive
endocrinologist (R.E.) for an infertility
evaluation:
Under
35 years old and have been trying to conceive for 9-12
months.
Over 35
years old and have been trying to conceive for 6 months
or more.
If you
have a history of
pelvic infection.
If your
partner has a poor semen
analysis.
A
history of 2 or more
miscarriages.
Irregular cycles and have been unsuccessful at
conceiving.
If you
have moderate or severe
endometriosis.
If you
have had more than 3 cycles of Clomid or Serophene.
If you
have 3 or more unsuccessful attempts at artificial
insemination.
Couples in which the female partner
isunder the age of
35, and who have not conceived after
1 year of unprotected
intercourse, should seek the help of a physician that
specializes in the treatment of infertility.
Couples, in which the female partner is
over the age 35,
should seek help after 6
monthsof being unable to conceive.
Couples who have known causes of
infertility (endometriosis, fibroids, irregular
periods, prior abortion, DES mothers, varicoles,
prior cancer treatment or about to receive
chemotherapy) should seek help even sooner.
